The Goa chief minister said that the Centre is helping in exploring blue economic activities in the state such as ship building, fishing, etc. Since Goa is a state with a vast coastline, the blue economic activities have a vast potential for growth in the long run.
According to the World Bank, the blue economy is the "Sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and jobs while preserving the health of the ocean ecosystem”.
Growing a sustainable blue economy requires a strategy to create jobs in coastal communities while ensuring the oceans remain non-polluted.
We rely on the ocean for food, jobs, transport, and for recreation. If one looks at the ocean one will realize its vastness, its power and potential just like that of the sun.
Blue economies offer the possibility of improved efficiency in ocean management and better treatment of marine ecosystems. The ocean happens to be a treasure house of natural wealth.
It is necessary to tap these resources without causing any harm to the ocean. The blue economy model aims for improvement of human wellbeing, while significantly reducing environmental risks.
There will be a bright future in the maritime cluster in Goa. Goa needs to pursue the blue economy concept with the Centre with vigour so that the State can benefit from it.
