Goa’s once peaceful and friendly social fabric seems to be unraveling under the strain of rising crime and social change. Reports of assaults and violent incidents, some occurring even in broad daylight, have become very frequent. Gone are the days when Goa truly reflected the susegad way of life ” calm, safe, and community-driven. Neighbours freely visited one another, doors were left open, and the sense of belonging was strong. The growing migrant population has played a role in changing the state’s demographic and cultural balance, but the lack of integration and regulation has worsened the problem. To move forward, Goa needs a renewed commitment to responsible tourism ” where visitors respect local customs and laws, and locals extend the same courtesy in return. Law enforcement must also act firmly to ensure safety and order. Equally important, Goans should once again embrace the dignity of labour by taking up jobs, even those considered low-paying, to reduce overreliance on migrant workers. As one local politician observed, a large portion of recent crimes involve migrants. Goa must now work collectively to reclaim its susegad spirit ” one built on peace, respect, and unity.
