Recently, a local from Colva was seriously assaulted by bouncers from a nightclub located just 1 km from the Colva Police Station. This highlights the troubling rise of bouncer-related violence in Goa. Incidents of bouncers attacking citizens are not limited to Colva; similar cases have occurred in North Goa, often linked to property disputes. Even major builders like Bhutani reportedly use bouncers to intimidate protestors at controversial housing projects.
This disturbing “bouncer culture” is spreading in once-peaceful Goa, where these individuals are increasingly being used to assault and intimidate citizens. In Assagao, bouncers allegedly committed assaults and destruction with impunity, reportedly under the protection of the then DGP Jaspal Singh, whose actions have brought disrepute to the IPS. Shockingly, Goa’s Chief Minister Pramod Sawant failed to demand accountability for this unacceptable behaviour.
Under the BJP Government, bouncer violence has worsened. Opposition leaders must press the government to establish strict guidelines for bouncers and their employers. The Colva nightclub should remain closed until the owners are heavily penalised, compensate victims, and enforce strict operating procedures to prevent future violence. Without such measures, Goa risks setting a dangerous precedent.
