In yet another skewed decision the Goa government is needlessly constructing a new Raj Bhavan Annexe. The present Raj Bhavan is a palace of great dimensions and architectural significance. It boasts the most unique and exquisitely carved furniture and ornate precious chandeliers and porcelain. Its scenic beauty and solitude hold panoramic views over the Mandovi and Zuari Rivers besides the Arabian Sea. Goa Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai should not have agreed to the proposal which was rightly rejected by the former Governor Satya Pal Malik. The Governor should search his conscience and ask himself and the government this question, ‘If it was good enough for successive Governors and dignitaries who visited and stayed in this magnificent Palace and a replacement having been roundly rejected by his predecessor, why is it not good enough for him?’ The Goa Government which is unable to even pay the poor their benefits of social welfare schemes has been squandering tax payers’ money on all and sundry.
Governor Pillai instead of carrying on the good work initiated by his predecessor Satya Pal Malik has been letting the State down by not exercising his powers judiciously. It is no point just talking, he must crack the whip and protect the interests of Goa and Goans at all times. The Governor and government should take heed of the warning by the late Roger Wrights, an American politician who said ‘The greatest danger facing our nation isn’t terrorism, global warming or the energy crisis. It is out-of-control, unbridled government spending’.
