This is with reference to the news report, 'Minister proposes police near clubs, wedding halls' (TGE, Dec 20). This is nothing novel, as the Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira, has only reiterated what hapless and disgruntled people of Goa have been saying , and crying out loudly over the years, only to fall on deaf ears. Unfortunately, even today's double engine govt in Goa has failed miserably to curb the menace of drunk driving and to reduce the number of accidents and deaths on Goa roads.Traffic Police cannot be held responsible for this, as even past governments in Goa have been hesitant to implement harsh measures of using alcometers outside night clubs and party halls, for fear of proving detrimental to the tourism industry. Needless to say, that Goa otherwise, would have been a different tourist paradise today.What a pity.
