Govts need to ensure justice for all


George Floyd was an African-American man who was murdered by a white police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota, during an arrest made after a store clerk suspected Floyd may have used a counterfeit twenty-dollar bill, on May 25, 2020. After his murder, protests against police brutality, especially towards black people, quickly spread across the globe including the United States. 

President Joe Biden on the third anniversary of George Floyd’s murder vetoed an effort led by Republicans to overturn a new District of Columbia law on improving police accountability. 

“I believe we have an obligation to make sure that all our people are safe and that public safety depends on public trust,” Biden said in a statement to Congress vetoing the effort. 

Good governance deserves that justice must be given. Without justice, lawlessness grows. Martin Luther King explains it rightly: "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly."

While Panaji was being made a smart city, bus shelters along the Dayanand Bandodkar Marg to Caranzalem (old Syndicate Bank) were demolished last year to widen the roads and lay utility pipes. In Oct 2023 a few shelters were erected which, unlike the previous ones, were smaller and had no roof nor seating arrangements.
