Speaking to the media at the White House, former US president Donald Trump stated that the United States would take some decision regarding Greenland to prevent China or Russia from establishing dominance there. Trump said, “We will take some decision on Greenland, whether people like it or not.” He also warned that if the US does not act, Russia or China may take control of Greenland. “We do not want Russia or China as our neighbours,” he added. This clearly indicates Trump’s intention to gain control over or annex Greenland. However, the people of Greenland do not want dominance by either the United States or Denmark. Leaders of all five political parties in the Greenland Parliament have signed a joint statement rejecting any proposal of control by the US or Denmark. They have firmly stated that they do not wish to become Americans or Danish citizens and want to remain Greenlanders. Greenland is a semi-autonomous territory under the Kingdom of Denmark and a member of the NATO alliance. Meanwhile, Denmark has strongly opposed Trump’s demands. From Venezuela to now Greenland, the Trump administration appears to be pursuing expansionist ambitions.
