The reported threat by Margao bakers to increase the price of bread (pao) over the hike in sopo fee from Rs 20 to Rs 50 is disappointing. The current pao is already smaller in size and weight, often not worth its price. Moreover, selling bread in plastic bags is against the law and should be addressed first. An increase of Rs 50 in sopo is not a major issue, but using it as an excuse to burden Goans and bread lovers is unacceptable. As a Niz Goenkar, I deeply respect our traditional bread sellers who work hard and wake us up with the familiar honking sound every morning. However, tradition cannot justify unfair practices.
