Sharada Mandir School management can now heave a sigh of relief as the decade-old and corroded foot overbridge outside their premises has now been taken up for dismantling by the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP). The ill-conceived bridge served no useful purpose from day one except being a white elephant and a danger to school children, passers-by, and motorists along the road to Dona Paula. It is providential that the bridge withstood the onslaught of the monsoons and gusty winds, which are known to bring down bridges and hoardings, causing fatalities. It is time we heed early warnings and undertake periodic maintenance works and not wait endlessly until disaster strikes.
