Illegal construction is happening openly in our region, showing a clear failure of governance. It is disheartening that people are forced to go to court to stop illegal buildings even though there are authorities meant to handle these issues. If the approval process is meant to be clear, why must citizens run from one office to another or approach the judiciary for action? The High Court recently told the authorities to take action, but it seems they are not listening. This shows how laws are ignored and hints at possible corruption. We are paying the price for this poor governance. Honest taxpayers suffer from floods, landslides, heat, and high electricity and water bills. Law-abiding citizens end up bearing the burden of services used by people living or running businesses in illegal structures. The most vulnerable lands, like comunidade areas, are often targeted for encroachment. Shockingly, the ruling party’s move to legalise these illegal structures will only encourage more such actions. What message are we giving when we reward illegal activity?
