A 112-metre-long and 26.5-metre-high casino vessel is reportedly proposed to enter the Mandovi River by replacing a smaller vessel. The protests in Panaji and Reis Magos against off-shore casinos are not solely environmental, they are cultural and social. Residents worry about the transformation of Goa’s identity from cultural heritage to gambling tourism, rising crime and moral concern including youth exposure to gambling culture and the strain on public peace. Casinos symbolize a shift toward short-term economic gain at the cost of long-term social wellbeing. Economic benefits from casino tourism should not come at the expense of families, youth, and community wellbeing. Goa is one of the few Indian states where casino gambling is legally permitted under regulated conditions. For young people, casinos may symbolize quick money, luxury, and status. Losses can quickly spiral into debt. Gambling addiction can severely affect mental health as young gamblers may experience anxiety and depression, substance abuse, academic or career decline and social withdrawal and in extreme cases can even lead to suicide. The primary difference between casino gambling and matka gambling lies in regulation. However, regulation does not eliminate addiction risks.
