Rising electricity bills are causing stress for households across the State. When power tariffs rise without proper public consultation or gradual implementation, families are forced to cut back on essentials. Delayed billing that leads to accumulated charges over several months is especially troubling, as sudden lump-sum bills can disrupt household budgets. The proposed shift to smart meters, though technologically progressive, has raised concerns about upfront installation costs and unclear long-term benefits. Smart meters can improve efficiency, reduce power theft, and help consumers manage usage better, but public awareness campaigns are needed to explain these benefits and address fears. Any tariff revision should be transparent and justified.
Gradual increases, rather than sudden hikes, would help households adjust more easily. The government could consider subsidies for middle- and lower-income groups. It is worth noting that the Delhi government provides free electricity to households consuming up to 200 units per month. Instead of imposing harsh fines, authorities should allow flexible payment plans and reduce or waive penalties for first-time delays. If delays happen due to administrative reasons, consumers should not be penalised. In the long term, renewable energy and rooftop solar incentives can reduce dependency on costly power and help stabilise tariffs, easing pressure on the middle class.
