With reference to Mr. Pereira’s write up in The Goan on January 21, I would like to bring a little more visibility to related factors.
Government has been doing its best to steam roll its agenda, it appears without paying heed to the cost-benefit ratio in this matter.
One of the points to be noted in the matter is the migration of IIT graduates to greener pastures abroad. While the data on these figures is not easily available, I have heard of instances in the past that barring 3 to 4 graduates per batch, the rest have migrated abroad.
So what are the benefits to our nation? In the past few years, pundits are discussing a declining trend, however this could be ascribed to tighter controls, specially by the outgoing US administration which could change in near future.
Question that begs asking is, what is the percentage of Goan students admitted to IIT? Shouldn’t we spend our resources on ensuring top class, high school education, which in turn would pave the way for majority of students to pursue further studies, on a solid basic foundation?
How can Goa dream of being an education hub, when the pathetic quality of our school system cannot produce even a handful minority who can pass the entrance exams for clerical positions in Government Departments?
