Israel has begun its Rafah offensive in southern Gaza despite international opposition and US reluctance. This comes a day after Hamas had agreed to a ceasefire proposal. A massive Rafah operation will lead to more civilian casualties. Among the city’s huddled masses are many children, all of them with an uncertain future and nowhere else to go. While the US and other western powers backing Israel are losing their patience, Israel is in no mood to pull back. It is quite clear that keeping the war going is Netanyahu’s preferred way to ensure his own survival in office. International leaders must make it clear that he cannot continue to do so. Both Israel and Hamas must take all steps necessary to establish a ceasefire immediately.
