Konkani is Goa’s sole official language

Goa is a unique state with a rich cultural identity rooted in Konkani, our mother tongue and official language under the Official Language Act of 1987. “Konkani Amchi Mai Bhas” is not just a slogan but the emotional identity of Goans across communities. Recent remarks by Subhash Velingkar at a Marathi Rajbhasha Samiti meeting in Panaji demanding official language status for Marathi are unnecessary and divisive. Marathi is already the official language of Maharashtra, one of India’s largest states. Goa has every right to preserve and protect its own linguistic identity. Goans respect Marathi and all other Indian languages spoken by people who live and work in Goa. However, migration and employment opportunities cannot become reasons to alter Goa’s official language structure. Ironically, Maharashtra strongly protects Marathi within its own borders. Goa deserves the same respect for Konkani. Instead of promoting harmony, repeated attempts to create divisions on the basis of religion and language only disturb Goa’s peaceful social fabric. Public figures should focus on unity, development, education, and preserving Goa’s heritage rather than provoking unnecessary controversies. Konkani is Goa’s soul, and it must remain the sole official language of Goa.
