Recently it was reported that our Tourism Minister Babu Ajgaonkar gave a green signal for holding Carnival parade in Panaji and Margao. He is also on record of saying ‘the show must go on’ and that parades will not be held at other places due to the pandemic.
What we don't understand is when tourists are flocking to Goa from all sides and Covid restrictions are flouted with impunity, why is such a fuss being made about the pandemic in holding Carnival parades all over the State.
Carnival is our traditional festival and is also known as Intruz. A lot of time, money and effort go into the preparation of the floats and other festivities.
As Goa commences preparations to celebrate its 60th Liberation Day this year, it would be in the fitness of things if the government can permit festivities and parades across the State. Also our ministers and MLAs should impress upon the government to rethink its decision.
Carnival parades are well appreciated in Goa and across the world. However, care must be taken to follow all Covid protocols that are laid out by the government. Hope better sense prevails. Viva Goenkar! Viva Carnival!
