Trees play a vital role in maintaining the balance of our ecosystem. Unfortunately, in the name of development, the government of Goa has cut down thousands of trees for various projects but has failed to plant and maintain new ones. After the monsoon season, new trees often die because they are not protected from direct sunlight or watered properly. Our elders planted many fruit trees, and now we enjoy the fruits of their labour. To keep our environment green, it’s best to plant trees between June and mid-August, when the soil can absorb moisture well. Monsoon rains help water the saplings and stabilise the roots. When planting trees, ensure there is enough space for them to grow.
Trees help clean the air we breathe, filter the water we drink, provide habitat for over 80% of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity, and combat climate change. They also provide food and medicine. During the summer, trees cool the city by shading our homes and streets, breaking up heat, and releasing vapour into the air through their leaves. Everyone wants to park their cars in the shade, especially in summer, but few want to plant a tree. We all know the value of trees, so let’s plant more and make our environment greener and more beautiful by growing flowers and fruit trees. Let’s save and protect our Mother Earth.
