Listen to voice of mothers, grandmothers; scrap 39A

Hundreds of Goans gathered at Azad Maidan on Sunday in support of villagers of Siridao. A wave of public concern is sweeping across Goa as opposition intensifies against the controversial 39A provision.  Citizens, activists, environmentalists, and community leaders argue that vast stretches of land are being converted at an alarming pace, raising urgent questions about sustainability, governance, and the long-term future of the state. Opponents of 39A describe it as a draconian measure that accelerates land-use changes without adequate environmental scrutiny or public consultation. The ongoing agitation over 39A is not merely a political issue; it has evolved into a social movement fuelled by concern, emotion, and a strong sense of local identity. What stands out most is the leadership of women in this agitation.  The government must recognize that when mothers and grandmothers take to the streets it reflects deep-seated anxiety. Women often act as the custodians of community stability. Ignoring such sentiment could risk widening the trust deficit between policymakers and the public. Once land is permanently converted and ecosystems disrupted, there is no turning back. Time to act is now.
