Over the past three years, unprecedented changes have taken place within China’s military” changes never witnessed before in the country’s history. At the beginning of 2023, China had at least thirty generals and admirals heading key departments. Almost all of them have either been removed or have suddenly disappeared. According to an investigation by The New York Times, only seven generals are currently found to be still active in the military. Such a massive upheaval has never been seen before in China’s history. China is a country where the truth rarely emerges from behind its steel walls. The state has long maintained an impenetrable barrier around itself. From ministers to top-ranking officials, people suddenly vanish”and even citizens within China often do not know what becomes of them. Earlier, China’s military was divided into seven military regions. However, President Xi Jinping abolished this structure and reorganized the country into five theatre commands to enable faster decision making across multiple fronts.The aim is to ensure that the army, navy, air force, and missile force operate jointly, and that in wartime there is “one command, one responsibility.” Clearly, significant developments are unfolding behind China’s walls.
