The news report ‘Police to focus on 3 ‘E’s to improve road safety following Mandovi bridge tragedy’ (TGE, Feb. 24) aptly sums up the requirements of ‘Enforcement, Education and Engineering’ that are the duties of any RTO, to ensure safety on roads and nothing new or special to Goa roads. The picture would have been different today, had they been enforced much earlier.
Secondly, asking tourists to refrain from using the GPS for directions, hardly holds any water or serve to reduce road accidents, except landing up in the wrong lane The same fate befalls even seasoned motorists from Goa, and is all part of adventure.
Finally, the RTO has missed out on a very important point of maintaining strict ‘Naka bandhis’ at salient points on Goa roads and highways, to check for drunk and over-speeding drivers. Traffic police should also be stationed at all entry and exit points of bridges to see that the speed limit of 40 kmph is not exceeded, as motorists are seasoned enough to dodge the hidden cameras and radars and do not bother about fines.
