The report published by The Goan, 'Goa, Mumbai has ‘abundance’ of microplastics in sea: Study' on Saturday was definitely a disturbing news article. With locations like Mumbai, Cape (Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu) and Goa having the “highest abundance” of microplastics in the sea when compared to other places in the Eastern Arabian Sea (EAS), is a dubious distinction, one would say.
What are we trying to prove; what are we to gain by polluting the sea with our plastic waste? We need to understand the sea is not a dumping yard, neither is the earth.
And, the beach warriors, although they may seem to be doing a good job, a great service by cleaning up the beach once in a while, they need to redirect their energies, time and efforts towards educating the general public and inducing some civic sense into them not to litter the shore with plastic and other waste, for that matter, not even on the streets.
Proper disposal, recycling, reuse, and reduction of waste is the key to saving the environment. The alarm bells are ringing, is anybody listening?
