MLA defections: Questions over fairness of hearings by Speaker

This is with reference to the news report 'Speaker concludes final arguments in MLAs disqualification plea' (TGE, Oct 26). At long last, the Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly, Ramesh Tawadkar, has concluded the hearings of the final arguments in the plea against the disqualification of eight Congress MLAs who defected to the BJP in September 2022.

The entire episode smacks of mockery and travesty of justice, given that it took two long years for the Speaker to decide and hear the petitions, and that too, only after the intervention and orders of the Supreme Court. On the face of it, therefore, there is nothing positive that is likely to emerge after the Speaker's judgement.

History will probably be made if, at all, the Speaker rules in favour of the Opposition and disqualifies the eight Congress MLAs.
