Goa government is very fond of patting their own backs and has got one more opportunity-- Modi’s pat for 16-way segregation of waste. Are our priorities skewed, shouldn’t expansion of waste management come prior to 16-way segregation. But are our authorities so isolated from reality. Does no one see the garbage piled in city markets and bylanes off the main roads. In South Goa even in many towns within 15kms radius of Margao, wet waste collection does not exist. So where does this waste end up -- fields, rivers and so called black spots. So these pundits propose surveillance cameras. Why not waste bins in demarcated spots to enable people to drop off their wet waste. On a rainy day, a surprise inspection at even the biggest bus depot in Panaji would show commuters gingerly stepping through filthy water, unsure if it is rain water or leakage of sewage. Only those who use this bus station, can really understand the distress and disgust of the commuters. But then lip service and assurances are the standard fare plated out by government.
