Need to streamline postal system

India Post’s decision to merge Registered A/D letters with the Speed Post system from September 1, 2025, will inconvenience the public, especially regarding delivery acknowledgements.

While the merger aims to improve efficiency, tracking, and cost-effectiveness by consolidating services, the Speed Post system currently does not provide an Acknowledgement Due (A/D) facility”raising concerns for those needing proof of delivery, particularly in legal and government-related correspondence.

Affordability is another worry. Speed Post is costlier than Registered Post, which rural users and small businesses have relied on for decades.

India Post cites declining Registered Post volumes, due to digital alternatives and private couriers, as the reason for the change. However, rather than phasing out useful features, the department should integrate A/D services into Speed Post, ensure affordability, and match or surpass private courier service standards.
