Paes’ political shift raises questions

Former ace tennis player Leander Paes has reportedly joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in New Delhi in the presence of senior leaders, including Union minister Kiren Rijiju, ahead of the West Bengal elections. He said that empowering youth is central to his vision of making India a global power. However, this move has raised questions, as Paes was earlier seen visiting Goa and urging voters to support the Trinamool Congress during the last Assembly elections. The shift in political alignment has surprised some observers.

There has also been public discussion around his personal legal matters, including a case under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act involving his former wife, Rhea Pillai, which went on for several years. Political decisions by public figures often invite scrutiny, especially when there is a noticeable change in stance. While opinions may differ, such developments highlight how sportspersons entering politics can generate debate about motivations, public expectations, and consistency in public life.
