Party, pray, relax: New Year's Day deserves a holiday

The State government, which scrapped the New Year's holiday, should instead declare a public holiday on January 1. After all, it's New Year's Day, and many people celebrate with good tidings, visiting relatives, enjoying evening dinners, or having get-togethers on December 31. New Year's Eve itself is a vibrant night filled with dancing, eating, drinking, fireworks displays, and even watchnight prayer services. However, these celebrations often extend past midnight and well into New Year's Day, which is why a public holiday on January 1 is so important.
