The issue of pigeon menace cropped up in the Goa Legislative Assembly. It is believed that pigeons cause respiratory ailments. Recently, the Mumbai Municipal Commissioner banned the feeding of pigeons in Kabutarkhanas. However, there was opposition from a community, following which the Chief Minister intervened and ordered controlled feeding of pigeons till a holistic solution to the issue is found. The government must seek the expert opinion of pulmonologists regarding the effect of pigeons on lung diseases. Also, a proper survey of people living in the vicinity of Kabutarkhanas must be undertaken to ascertain if there is any increase in lung diseases. If it is found that indeed the pigeons are responsible for the increased incidence of lung ailments, then the government must take necessary steps to curb the menace.
