Of late, there is a decry among the public over political interference in the functioning of police. But, it is very difficult in the present scenario to keep the police insulated from politicians.
Today police are meekly concerned with carrying out the dictates of their political masters rather than protecting the life and property of the people and solving the cases impartially. The solution lies not only in revamping the police but also revamping the mindset of their political masters.
Unfortunately, this is not possible until the political class themselves take the initiative. More important is when the political class directs the police officials to transgress the law they should take bold initiative to tell them that they know their procedures.
What the police also need is protection from undue political dictate which can only be achieved if they are given functional autonomy.
