Poll campaigning should not compromise people’s health

The Model Code of Conduct is in force ahead of the state assembly elections scheduled for February 14. This coupled with the fact there has been a surge in Covid-19 infections as the third wave is at its peak has forced the politicians to carry out a subdued election propaganda. Many political parties have resorted to door-to-door campaigning in order to reach out to the voters. Some political parties consider door-to-door campaigning as the more effective way to reach out to the people as compared to the social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, SMS, etc. However due to the Covid-19 related protocol the number of people from a particular political party that can take part in the door-to-door campaigning is also restricted. It is also observed that over the past few days several political leaders have tested positive for the novel coronavirus. As politicians and their supporters come in close contact with the people during the door-to-door campaigning, it would be in the fitness of things for these campaigners to carry a negative RT-PCR report along with a full vaccination certificate. People have the right to protect themselves.
