Promote freshwater fish farming in a big way

Fish, which happens to be the staple food of Goans, is in short supply during the monsoon season and sold at exorbitant price. This is so because of the rough sea conditions and the fishermen do not venture into the high sea for a catch. Goans then are forced to consume dry fish during the rains and the price of dry fish also skyrockets. The only answer appears to be freshwater fish. Fish lovers reportedly rushed to Curtorim on Sunday to purchase a bountiful catch of freshwater fish harvested from Mai-Tollem. A wide variety of fish including chonak, catla and other varieties were available at the numerous lakes in the village. It is understood that farmers store the water during the monsoon for irrigation and later utilize the water resources for fish breeding bringing to the fore the rich-biodiversity Curtorim village is known for. Around 40% of all known species of fish are found in freshwater. The authorities need to see to it that the fish seed is easily available within the State in order to promote freshwater fish farming.
