Protecting paradise: Important to curb Goa's forest imbalance

Protecting paradise: Important to curb Goa's forest imbalance

Forests are an integral part of our environment, playing a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. They provide us with fresh air by absorbing carbon dioxide and filtering pollutants, contributing significantly to the battle against air pollution. As reported in some media outlets, the initial hike in tree-felling fees from Rs 100 to Rs 1,000 has seemingly been reversed, returning to the original price.

Amid this development, several large-scale projects continue to be proposed. We must remember that true sustainable development cannot come at the cost of ruthless deforestation, which inevitably leads to worsening air quality and increased health problems like lung issues, asthma, and allergies.

It's encouraging to hear that the State government is finalizing a dedicated forest management plan for Goa. This plan has the potential to benefit both animals and humans, while protecting the ecosystem. Human encroachment undoubtedly disrupts animal habitats, forcing wild animals to venture into human settlements in search of prey. As with the recent leopard incident, where it was trapped and relocated to Bondla Zoo, such occurrences highlight the need for increased vigilance over our flora and fauna.

Let's not allow Goa to turn into another concrete jungle like Mumbai or Delhi, where air quality is dangerously deteriorating. We must act now to preserve the natural beauty and ecological balance of our State. A timely intervention can indeed work wonders for generations to come.
