The Baga River flows into the Arabian Sea from the village of Anjuna and the Sangolda village via Calangute and Arpora The Calangute and Arpora villages have a wide expanse of the Baga river.
The 600 meter stretch of road from Sankwadi to Baga passes near Baga river. Therefore, all vehicles are at risk. To date, two four-wheelers have crashed into the river. Many two-wheelers have plunged into the river after drivers lost control. To date, two persons have drowned. The problems are unpredictable. Anything can happen at any time. One day the road may collapse into the river. So the river bank or the road is in dire need of a defence wall.
According to Vidyadhar Divkar, ward member of Sankwadi-Baga ward, the file of the defence wall was sent to the water resources department three years ago. The member Vidyadhar Divkar had also requested the then Water Resources Minister Vinoda Paliencar to inspect the site. According to Divkar, no action has been taken by the WRD yet. For the last 20 years, Divkar has been raising his voice in every gram sabha. He now expects MLA Michael Lobo to help.
Divkar also says that he has also taken a no-objection certificate from Fernando Mascarenhas, a landlord, for the construction of the protective wall. Building a protective wall along the river requires a certificate from the Captain of Ports.
