It is election time in India and one remembers T N Seshan as Election Commissioner who implemented very strict norms for electioneering. He even kept in check influential politicians during campaigning. The election reforms by Seshan are noteworthy. However, electioneering norms need to be more stringent and the election commission should be given more powers. In Goa, it appears the ruling party easily subverts election norms and the Opposition is heckled thus creating an uneven playing field. The Election Commission has the mandate to create a level playing field for all parties for a free and fair election.
