In what could give a major push to Goa’s economy, the much awaited iron ore mining activities have reportedly commenced in the State after a gap of over six years. It is learnt that the Bicholim Mineral Block has got permission for production of three million tons per annum of iron ore. This is good news for Goans on the eve of the general elections.
The stoppage of mining in Goa dealt a devastating blow to the livelihoods of people which includes both in mining and non-mining areas and has resulted in all-round gloom in the state economy and social life. Agriculture, art and craft, tourism and all allied industries have suffered because of suspension of mining activities.
The halt of mining activity has led to major loss of investor confidence which had a long-term negative impact on Goa’s economy. The psychological and social costs of prolonged unemployment post the ban on mining in Goa has impacted harshly on the quality of life of affected individuals and families. Experiences of low self-esteem and loss of self-identity impact on physical and mental health that can extend to broader consequences of social isolation. Now with mining activities in the State getting a new lease of life, things will improve in the State both economically and socially. One can look forward to ‘Achhe Din’ ahead.
