The numberof fatal road accidents that Goa has been witnessing during this pandemic andeven in the midst of this so-called curfew is a matter of concern.
The thrustof the government should be in urgently tackling the causes of the increasingnumber of road accidents. The roads across Goa are in an extremely pathetic andvery critical state. Poor road engineering is a cause of many accidents. Therealso needs to be a total crackdown on drunken driving and reckless overspeeding. Vigilance by the traffic authorities must be enhanced to stop theyoung unlicenced and rash riders. Cattle squatting on our highways besides thedogs and pigs crossing our roads is also a cause of many accidents, some beingfatal.
Maybe it’shigh time that our traffic officials who currently have the expertise in onlychallening people for minor traffic violations, are now professionally trainedon all aspects of proper traffic management and road safety.
Road safetyis of paramount importance. Government’s first duty and highest obligation ispublic safety. Safety does not happen by accident. It is the solemn duty ofeveryone to take their own safety and the safety of others seriously.
