Socialist and secular are part of our Constitution

Several opposition parties on Friday criticised RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale’s call to review the words ‘socialist’ and ‘secular’ in the Preamble, calling it a “deliberate attack” on the soul of the Constitution.

The Supreme Court, in a landmark judgement on 25 November 2024, has clearly upheld the inclusion of the words “socialist” and “secular” in the Preamble of the Indian Constitution. It dismissed petitions challenging the 42nd Amendment, which added these words. The court stated that these principles are part of the Constitution’s basic structure and confirmed that the Preamble can be amended. It also clarified that Indian socialism means a welfare state with equal opportunities, while Indian secularism allows the state to engage with religious matters without losing its secular nature.

BJP/RSS leaders should first read and understand this Supreme Court judgement before playing their dirty communal politics. By attacking the words ‘socialist’ and ‘secular’, they are trying to push India back by 100 years to serve their divisive agenda. Jai Hind.
