Members of the All Goa Rent-a-Cab Association reportedly met Calangute police inspector Laxi Amonkar at the Calangute Police station on Tuesday to give their own explanation over the increasing number of accidents involving rental vehicles in Goa. The association attributed many incidents to drink-and-drive cases involving tourists and the misuse of fake or flipped number plates. Well, everyone knows that the root cause for most road accidents is the availability of alcohol every few metres but yet the government is not seen doing anything to restrict liquor sale. Why? Because the government is more interested in wooing domestic tourists in the state by keeping all whole-sale liquor outlets/bars fully open even in the most remote villages/gallis. The worse part is that the traffic cops too are not seen conducting their 'nakabandhis' (especially in all coastal belt areas) to keep a strict check against those indulging in drunken driving. Well, I feel that the operators/owners of all rent-a-cab businesses should stop allowing the domestic tourists to drive their rental vehicles but instead should compulsorily give them a driver while renting their vehicles, if not should turn their rent-a-cab vehicles into app based taxis.
