Suman Kalyanpur was a renowned playback singer in Hindi, Marathi, and several other Indian languages. She was born in what was then British India, now part of Bangladesh. Her voice was exceptionally melodious, delicate, and soulful, often drawing comparisons with Lata Mangeshkar. However, Sumanji maintained a distinct and unique singing style of her own. Between the 1950s and 1980s, she made a significant contribution to the Hindi film industry.  She lent her voice to timeless songs such as "Mera Pyar Bhi Tu Hai," "Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya," "Jaan Chali Jaye," and "Na Tum Hume Jano." She made her Hindi film debut in 1954 by singing five songs for the film "Darwaza." Thereafter, her musical journey continued uninterrupted, and she went on to sing more than 740 film songs. During the 1960s, she recorded over 145 duets with Mohammed Rafi. Many of her Hindi songs remain immensely popular even today.Through her melodious and emotionally expressive voice, she enriched the world of Indian music. With her passing, a golden era of Indian classical and light music has come to an end.
