Stray dog issue needs immediate attention

With reference to the excellent editorial titled "Govt Can’t Afford to Ignore the Vexed Stray Dog Issue" in The Goan Everyday dated Saturday, 7 December 2024, I would like to suggest some effective measures to address the problem.

Stray dogs should be sterilised and trained for roles such as police dogs, bomb and drug detection dogs, rescue dogs, lifeguard dogs, therapy dogs, and guide dogs for the visually impaired.

Secure garbage bins with small slits should be installed to prevent animals from accessing waste, and instant garbage-incinerating bins should be introduced for efficient waste management.

Aggressive dogs should be muzzled when taken out in public to ensure the safety of others. Additionally, courses on dog care and breeding should be made mandatory for anyone wishing to own a pet dog.

Implementing these measures can significantly help tackle the stray dog issue in an effective and humane manner.
