According to a news report, 876 cases of drunk driving in Goa were reported in a special drive by the Goa traffic police, with Calangute topping the list. It is therefore a matter of great concern to the people of Goa, given the increasing number of road accidents and deaths due to drunk driving on Goa roads. However this is nothing new to Goa as the numbers keep going up during every festival and more can be expected during Christmas and New Year week, due to the influx of tourists. It is a pity that the Goa traffic cell has yet to contend with this problem year after year but have yet to find a solution to bring down drunken driving cases. One way could be by increasing the number of 'Nakha Bandhi' check posts , breath-analyser tests, and by imposing hefty fines and imprisonment for those found in an inebriated state. At present , there is a woeful non-implementation of such stringent measures. Hence the the increase in the number of drunk driving cases.
