Tackling menace of reckless driving by tourists

Numerous fatal accidents and loss of innocent lives compelled the Transport Minister to acknowledge the nuisance caused by reckless driving of rent-a-cars in Goa. The minister now mandates installing speed governors on these cars; failure to comply will result in custody. Both drivers and owners will face penalties for violations.  

The minister rightly holds operators accountable for enabling this nuisance for profit. This proactive stance is encouraging, but sustained implementation is crucial. The issue demands serious attention from law enforcement, with accountability for negligence. Additional measures include a centralised booking system, mandatory dash cams for real-time monitoring, restricting vehicles for repeat traffic violators, prominently displaying rental terms and penalties, and considering mandatory drivers to prevent drunk driving.  

Prominent vehicle markings aid identification and deterrence. Moreover, the government should explore alternatives like cab aggregators to reduce reliance on rental cars. Goa cannot afford more lives lost to this menace.

Portable fire-extinguishers needed for all vehicles

A car was reportedly destroyed in a fire near the Kadamba depot at Porvorim on Monday. It is learnt that it took nearly 40 minutes for the fire services to extinguish the fire by which time the car was completely gutted. It needs to be noted that in the recent past there have been several incidents of vehicles, both four-wheelers and two-wheelers going up in flames for no apparent reason.
