The State government has mandated speed governors for all transport vehicles, including rent-a-cabs, to combat speeding and reduce accidents in Goa. While this move is commendable, it alone may not suffice to address the broader issue. Private vehicle users also contribute to accidents through reckless driving.
The root cause often lies in a lack of concentration and disregard for traffic rules, compounded by corruption in obtaining driving licenses. A deficient public transport system leads to increased reliance on two-wheelers, exacerbating congestion and accidents.
To truly mitigate accidents, the government should focus on comprehensive solutions. This entails enhancing public transportation with modern coaches, discouraging private vehicle use, imposing substantial fines for traffic violations, and implementing AI camera surveillance for enforcement. Half measures like mandating speed governors for select vehicles are insufficient. A holistic approach is necessary to ensure road safety and alleviate congestion in Goa.
