It is said that it is great to be in Goa during the rains - it's a great experience. But in the past couple of days, it does not seem to be so. According to news reports, rains have pounded Goa relentlessly, turning it into a big ocean. There's water, water everywhere! Perhaps, it's time now to take a reality check. What is it that is causing Goa to flood in this manner, the water levels rising? We need to take a closer look at the environment. It is good that the people of Goa and elsewhere are waking up in protest against ill-conceived infrastructure projects which pose a threat to the ecology of the region.
Mumbai is already paying a huge price, facing the consequences of the mindless development projects undertaken during the past couple of years. Now even a little rainfall is enough to flood areas which were at one time, flood free.
We need to understand that the Earth is the only planet which sustains life. Cyclones, hurricanes, landslides, earthquakes, etc., will be the order of the day if we don't wake up now!
