The poor maintenance by PWD and deteriorating conditions of some government quarters have led to several staff vacating the flats and moving out of the area. Some of them have moved out after the hike in house rent allowance. Getting a residential pool accommodation was a prestigious matter among government employees during earlier days. Those days it was difficult to get admission but now the situation has become different due to unsafe conditions and poor maintenance of the building.
Many say that the quarters at Bhatlem and Patto are around four to five decades old. Even the work orders given to the contractors have resulted in inferior quality of works and are a mirror to the government’s negligence. The PWD authorities neglect to check the quality of works made.
The government should frame a policy to utilise the unoccupied quarters. The unoccupied quarters should be upgraded, renovated and properly maintained, so that employees could take the accommodations. Hold AE/JE and contractors accountable for poor maintenance and repair work. Impose penalties on contractors, sub-contractors for executing unsatisfactory and inferior quality of works.
