The meaning behind Navratri celebrations

Navratri is a nine-day celebration in India and every State has unique way of celebrating it. In south india the same is celebrated by arranging idols made up of mud or clay in steps of wooden planks or steel plates. The steps are in odd numbers from 3 to 11. The idols are arranged  which includes various statues of deities and some depicting hindu mythology or stories. The whole theme behind this is that when Durga was chased by Mahishasura she got a place to hide in it and thus for nine days she was inside a cave and during this nine days she started making idols of mud and thus she saved herself from clutches of Mahishasura who wanted to kill her. The traditional garbha is performed by Gujaratis and thus festival  is celebrated with pomp and grand manner. The nine days start just before Dussehra day which also marks return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya .
