In August 2013, the late Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar announced the construction of a hospital at Tuem. The foundation stone was laid to upgrade the community health centre into a full-fledged hospital. This was to cater to a population of one lakh that covers one municipality and 20 villages. The 100-bed hospital was completed in September 2021 by the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) at a cost of Rs 52 crore. In the same month, only a dialysis unit was made operational by the present CM, while the rest of the building remains vacant.
The reasons for the hospital not being fully operational even after nearly four years are: the GSIDC is yet to hand over the hospital to the health services, the necessary equipment has to be listed, funds made available, tendered and purchased. These issues have also affected staff recruitment. To save time and for planning, some of these activities could have been carried out when the building was coming up or at least after two years. Hopefully, the sickening situation will soon be cured.
