Time to amend the anti-defection law

Oncethe votes are counted, all politricks and politicking of that election mustend. The candidate elected must consider himself or herself as therepresentative of all the constituents. This should be done by every personelected, whether MP, MLA, councillor or a panchayat member. There should neverbe any sort of revenge, retribution or highhandedness against those who workedagainst the winning candidate. Everything that happened during that electioncampaign must be buried deep under and the person elected should act as astatesman by reaching out in a special way to those who worked against him/herin that election. Once the election results are declared everyone should workin unison for the progress and prosperity of the entire constituency.

In ademocracy free and fair elections are fundamental but we don’t see ithappening. Defections are another malaise that unfortunately is so rampant. Theanti-defection law must be amended to plug the existing loopholes. If a winningcandidate wants to swing like a monkey to another party, he must resign andseek re-election and that too not before paying for the expenses incurred bythe Election Commission on the election the candidate has just won.
