Trucks carrying different types of materials such as laterite stones, rubble, metal and sand are supposed to cover these with tarpaulin. However, this requirement is often flouted and the situation turns dangerous for the lives of travellers and pedestrians on the road. There have been incidents when materials from vehicles have fallen on other vehicles and resulted in accidents. On Wednesday, November 18, a big stone fell off from a truck carrying construction debris near the old bus-stand in Ponda at 10.50 am. Fortunately, there were no pedestrians or any vehicle close to this particular truck. Had the said stone fallen on any passerby, it would have certainly caused hurt. The Regional Transport Office (RTO) and the police department should take note of this incident and initiate stringent action against vehicles failing to cover the materials being transported on regular basis. Indeed, precious human lives must be assured safety at all costs. Let us hope that the authorities would consider this matter with utmost seriousness and deal with defaulters with an iron hand.
