Vaccine shortage a cause for worry

The central government announced the vaccination of persons in the 18-45 age group from May 1 and had even started the registration on CoWin website from Wednesday.

However it is learnt that no state has received the Covid-19 vaccine. Hence several states like Gujarat, Delhi, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan have informed the Centre that they will not be able to start the vaccination of all those over 18 years in the third phase from May 1.

This is indeed a cause for worry. No arrangement was done for the supplies of the vaccine and the onus is now put on the states to procure the vaccines directly from the manufacturers.

If this was the case then the deadline for starting the third phase of the vaccination programme should have also been left to the states. Goa too will not be able to commence the third phase of vaccination from May 1.

It is pertinent to note that younger people are also falling prey to the virus. A nineteen-year old girl from Margao lost her life to the infection.

Matters are even worse for the private hospitals as they are not sure if they will be able to give the second dose.
