Forest officials have warned youngsters to avoid adventurous trips in forests after one group reportedly lost their way in the dense forests between Goa and Khanapur (The Goan January 2). It is learnt that about nine students while trekking near Kankumbi bordering Goa lost their way and had to roam throughout the night, braving the cold and risking wildlife threat. Thankfully the Kankumbi range forest officers along with their Goan counterparts managed to rescue the youth in the wee hours the next day. Some precautionary measures can prevent such incidents. Before entering the jungle, it is important to educate oneself about the area, including the terrain, and any potential hazards. Carrying a map, compass, and GPS device can help people navigate and find their way back if they get lost. It can be helpful to mark the trail as you walk, using natural markers. One needs to stick to well-established trails and avoid taking shortcuts. Travelling with a local guide who is familiar with the area can reduce the risk of getting lost. Necessary permission to trek needs to be obtained from the officials concerned.
